Golda Meir

Golda Meir: Israel's First and Only Female Prime Minister

Early Life and Career

Golda Meir was born on May 3, 1898, in Kiev, Ukraine. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was seven years old, settling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Meir became involved in politics at a young age, joining the Socialist Zionist Labor Party. In 1921, she moved to British Mandate Palestine, where she worked for the Histadrut, the Jewish labor federation.

Rise to Prime Minister

In 1948, Meir helped to found the State of Israel and served as its first Ambassador to the Soviet Union. She later held a variety of cabinet positions, including Minister of Labor and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On March 17, 1969, at the age of 70, Meir became the fourth prime minister of Israel, and to date, the only female prime minister.
